Meet Jonathan Miller
It began Circa 2007, when a spark flew between Jonathan Miller and a friend’s dachshund.
An artist with a business degree from College of Charleston, Miller decided to use an art form he’d been playing with—layering construction paper and card stock into colorful, often comical, designs—to create a children’s book based on the spunky weenie dog.
The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund series debuted in 2008 with Sammy’s Last Week in Charleston. Next came Sammy on Safari, Sammy in Space, and A History of Wonder Dachshunds. Miller’s fifth book will be released in spring 2024.
Each illustration is made from hundreds of pieces of paper, with some taking upwards of 30 hours to create. As for the stories, Miller worked in humor that appeals to children and adults alike.
Miller lives in Charleston, SC, with his wife and two young sons. He visits schools around the country (more than 200 per year), speaking to students about reading, writing, art, and book- making. Ask him to tell you about some of his experiences in the classroom—he has some hilarious tales.
Miller has also spoken at the Savannah Book Festival, SC Book Festival, and Capital Bookfest. His work has been featured on PBS, the hit Lifetime show Army Wives, and the podcast A Thousand and One Goodnights, as well as in numerous publications.
